Break me down, mold me up and reshape me

So much happens in such a short span of time. I doubt my mind will every truly wrap itself around everything that went on over the course of this summer. But now I'm here, ready to start.

James Blake + Bon Iver Collide

Two of indie music's falsetto Gods have collaborated to create a strange yet beautifully haunting tune that was produced through back and forth emails between Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and James Blake during the Spring.

Last week, Blake's Twitter feed stated he was up to something with Bon Iver. His tweet was simple, cryptic, and caused people around the blogoshpere to make their best "O" faces. The Tweet read: “24th August 2011 – James Blake & Bon Iver ‘Fall Creek Boys Choir.’”

The track features Vernon on Vocals and Blake on production.

This track is reminiscent of Vernon's previous work with his emotive and haunting falsetto vocals, as well as Blake's minimal instrumentation. And yet, something about this tune didn't make my one chest hair stand at attention. Don't get me wrong, I like the track, but I'm not in love with it. Maybe it will grow on me with time.

The buzz and the hype surrounding this collaboration may be the reasons this track didn't live up to my expectations. This tune may have worked better without the auto-tune, in my opinion. I wasn't a fan of the redundant drum beat or the barking dog. That being said, I still liked the track- I want to love it.

Perhaps nothing can compare to Vernon's work with Bon Iver - his last two LP's have been frakkin' epic. And Blake's track "Limit to Your Love" is so simple, yet so layered and well composed.

What we get from Fall Creek Boys Choir is nothing unique from each respected musician and that's totally fine, because Vernon is one of the most versatile artists out there. I hope he and Blake surprise me with some of the future releases they have planned.

The track can be purchased on iTunes starting August 29.
